Whether you’re in a hospital, factory, or museum, OSHA requirements and industry best practices govern the safety measures that must be put in place before allowing business to be conducted. From top to bottom, every building should support the health of everyone that works there. This has always been an important issue, but it’s getting more attention now than ever before. We’re seeing just how important it is to be able to sterilize and disinfect every room, and for many people, this starts with the floor.

Top Characteristics of a Sterile Floor Coating

In order to be as sterile as possible, any floor you install must be easy to clean. The longer dirt and bacteria cling to the floor, the higher the likelihood that someone will come into contact with these dangerous germs. Minimizing contact with germs and bacteria is the first line of defense when it comes to protecting people against illness.

In addition to being easy to clean, any sterile floor must be resistant to damage or impact from chemicals. Anyone who is concerned about hygiene will need to clean their floor regularly, and any coating you choose should be able to withstand wear and tear from both use and cleaning. If a floor coating becomes damaged, even if the cracks, divots, or other wear-and-tear are invisible to the naked eye, it still means that bacteria can linger there and spread potentially deadly infections.

The Most Sterile Concrete Coating

Now that we have some understanding of what makes a concrete coating sterile, it’s easier to pick the right coating for your floor. There are four main types of floor coating to choose from: epoxy, polyurethane, novolac, and urethane mortar.

Epoxy

The most sterile floor coating available today is epoxy. Designed for both commercial and industrial applications, epoxy flooring goes on smoothly with minimal down time. It’s seamless, so there are no cracks or open areas for dirt and bacteria to gather.

Epoxy floor coating also dries in a high-gloss shine, so it’s easy to see superficial dirt and areas where dust and debris have gathered. It’s available in many unique colors and styles, so you can customize it to your space.

Its most beneficial quality is that it’s extremely easy to clean. It’s also very wear-resistant, and can stand up to many chemicals, which is useful in areas like hospitals or healthcare facilities where intensive cleaning products must be used frequently.

Finding the Most Sterile Floor Coating

There are so many things to consider when you’re picking a floor coating for a commercial, or industrial space. You’ll need to consider state laws, OSHA regulations, and any other statutes and standards that are unique to your industry. Plus, balancing cost and figuring out the right time for installation is always a factor.
